A presentation on Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society, 1969 – 2022 for Heritage Week.

This is a new 20-minute video recording on the history of the Society, now better known as Offaly History with lots of interesting photos especially recorded for Heritage Week. We want to thank all who have contributed to making it so successful so far with activities across the county, and continuing until Sunday. The lecture on Larkin’s maps and their predecessors we shall post next week, also a video on the Durrow Pattern. Our next lecture is on 5 September on Michael Collins and is important. More information next week.

It is great to have so much support for local studies from Birr, Banagher, Kilcormac, Shinrone, Edenderry and Tullamore. Offaly History is in progress since 1969. We salute all the old members who attended at this outing to Tinnycross’s Hollow House in about 1975. Included in the picture is our good member Owen Wyer, also Cecil Lumley, Ger Coughlan, Baron von Ow, Danny Robbins, the late Peadar O Maolain (who died in the last ten days), Fr McGreevy who was the secretary, Peter Foran, Joan McGill, Jim Bracken, Frank Meehan, Mrs Scully and so many more. Can you name the younger members of those days

Taken in High Street during Heritage Week in 2014 with Fergal MacCabe at the Crawford Building.

Lots of members and friends at Durrow about 1990 including the Geoghegans, Evelyn Goodbody, the Vances, Mr Flangan of Lowertown, Sister Oliver, Geoff Oakley and so many more. Look at the video for lots more about our work since 1969. Durrow alas is one of our failures, but we will never surrender to apathy and do hope the state will take action in 2023.
